Black and Grey Tattoos in San Diego by Chris Cockrill

If you're looking for a black and grey tattoo in San Diego, from a small piece to a full sleeve, this is where to start. I've been tattooing since 1998, the last ten years at Remington Tattoo in North Park.

The technique strips everything back to ink and skin. No color to lean on. Just line weight, value, and how well you understand what you're drawing. Gray wash layered carefully. Designs that hold up over time because the fundamentals are right.

Getting a Black and Grey Tattoo in San Diego

Black and gray is not a style on its own. It's a technique that works across almost every style. Traditional American, Japanese, botanical, script. What changes is how the gray wash is built. You're working with light and shadow the same way a draftsman would. It rewards patience. The best pieces in this technique are built slowly, with intention, sometimes not rushed through in a single session.

Color tattoos are beautiful fresh. They also shift. Some colors fade faster than others and the relationship between those colors changes over decades in ways that are hard to predict. This style is more forgiving over time. The contrast between dark ink and skin stays readable for longer. That's not a sales pitch, it's just how skin works.

I also do Japanese tattoos and traditional American work at Remington Tattoo.

How I Build a Black and Grey Piece

Black and grey is built in layers. Lines and solid black go in first, then the gray wash, working from dark to light. The skin itself is the brightest highlight, so knowing where to leave it alone matters as much as where to shade. For cover-ups and hard edges I'll use opaque grays, which sit on top of old ink instead of disappearing into it.

Bigger pieces take a few sessions for a reason. The values settle as the skin heals, and I'd rather push a piece darker later than go too heavy the first time.

My Background

I apprenticed at Fine Line Tattoo in Houston and started out doing black fine line work, which taught me how much a single clean line matters. I moved to San Diego in 2003 and put in years at Avalon Tattoo II, Lucky's Tattoo Parlor, Scorpion Studios, and American Tattoo in Vista before landing at Remington.

Some recent black and grey work: a death's-head moth, a floral sleeve addition, and a Moby Dick back piece.
