The History and Art of the Rock of Ages Tattoo in San Diego

The iconic Rock of Ages tattoo design has a rich history in traditional American tattoo culture, especially here in San Diego. This stunning nautical tattoo often features a ship sailing through rough waves near a rock formation adorned with a cross, sometimes figures or other variations. It's a classic motif that is interpreted many ways but often represents overcoming adversity through faith and inner strength.

Original Painting by J.A. Oertel

The Rock of Ages design emerged among sailors in the late 1800s as protection during treacherous voyages at sea. The first known painting titled "Rock of Ages" was by Johannes Adam Simon Oertel in 1876, who was a German-American Episcopal clergyman and artist.

The image is derived from a famous Christian hymn written around 1762 by Reverend Augustus Toplady. Legend says he wrote the lyrics during a storm when he took shelter in a gap in the gorge. While some disagree this specific event occurred, the rock is now marked with a plaque reading β€œthe rock of ages.”

It's hard to pinpoint exactly who introduced the Rock of Ages into tattoo culture in the early 1900s, but it was recreated by many old school masters like Bert Grimm, Samuel O'Reilly, Ed Hardy and countless others. The rock and cross evoked finding refuge in God during storms, while the ship symbolized persisting through hardship. This design grew popular among bikers, military members and everyday folks seeking a reminder to stay strong in the face of adversity.
