Exploring the artistry of irezumi in east county
Japanese tattoos, known as irezumi, have had a profound influence on tattoo artistry around the world, including my own work as an American tattoo artist based in San Diego. During the mid-19th century, following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Japan opened its doors to foreign visitors, sparking Western fascination with the intricate designs and cultural storytelling of Japanese body art. Despite the Japanese government’s efforts to ban tattooing at the time, Western travelers—particularly sailors, artists, and anthropologists—were captivated by the artistry, with even notable figures like King George V of England reportedly receiving tattoos from Japanese master Hori Chiyo. This global curiosity was further fueled by ukiyo-e woodblock prints, which depicted tattooed heroes from Japanese folklore and showcased the craftsmanship and symbolism of the art form. Today, as a tattoo artist inspired by this rich tradition, I incorporate elements of Japanese design into my work, blending their timeless motifs, such as koi fish, dragons, and cherry blossoms, with my own modern approach to create meaningful and dynamic tattoos for my clients.
